Kenyan Pathologist Puzzled By Wanjiru’s Death

The world-class marathoners first autopsy since his death draws no conclusions.

More of the same from the death of Olympic gold medalist, Sammy Wanjiru: no answers. On Wednesday, doctors performed the first autopsy on the late Kenyan runner. Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Moses Njue has questioned the claim that Wanjiru died as a result of a fall from a second-floor balcony.

He argued that Wanjiru sustained injuries on his palms and knees and that this suggests the athlete was conscious when he was jumping. Dr. Njue could not explain the fatal injury to the back of Wanjiru’s head.

“He landed on his legs and supported himself with his hands. Where did the injury on the back come from? We could turn into fools if we don’t ask ourselves this question,” he said.

The doctor came to Wanjiru’s residence to measure the distance from the balcony to the ground.

Sammy Wanjiru won Olympic gold in the marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
