They will race the 3,000m final tonight.
Today in Lille, France, Kenyans Caroline Chepkoech and Ziporrah Wanjiru will be doing their best to represent Kenya at the opening night of the World Youth Championships.
Both runners will be competing in the 3000m final. Chepkoech is confident that Kenya can retain the title. She draws inspiration from the fact that in her native tongue, Kalenjin, “Lille” means “to light up” or “to shine”. She is the African junior cross-country champion as well as an African your bronze medalist in the 3000m.
Referring to her teammate, Wanjiru, Chepkoech said, “We both have international experience and must plan well and pray to God for guidance.”
Wanjiru is a high school and second-born in a family of seven. She remains humble about her goals in Lille. “I just want to improve my performances in the track,” she said. “I have realised there is some light at the end of the tunnel since I simply took up athletics on my own. There was no role model to guide me.”
