Many fans of the sport may have dismissed Kenenisa Bekele’s chances at the Olympics, but they may soon regret this decision.
After all, the Ethiopian is the veritable king of the distance events on the track.
He won the double gold (5,000m and 10,000m) in the 2008 Olympics.
In recent years, however, Bekele has been plagued by injury. His agent, Jos Hermens, insists that Bekele is healthy. “He has confidence again,” he admits. “He has no physical problems now. He was overraced and overtrained but now he is fully back to fitness.”
Hermens confides that Bekele had been doing too much training and not enough recovering in the lead-up to the Olympics, which partially explain his less-than-stellar race in Paris last month where he took ninth.
Since then, Bekele has been regrouping at home.
In fact, he built his own soft track there, but construction delays prevented him from running on it until May.
