Kelly Calway Wins Marine Corps Marathon

The American averaged a 6:11 pace for 26.2 miles.

Running USA’s Angela Casey reported on the results of Sunday’s 38th edition of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. Girma Bedada of Ethiopia won the men’s race in 2:21:32, while American Kelly Calway was the first woman to cross the line in 2:42:16.

“At mile marker eight, she separated from her group and didn’t look back,” writes Casey. “Calway was followed by Virginia Slaby with a race time of 2:48. Emily Shertzer trailed Slaby by less than a second and came in third. Calway, part of the United States Army Running Team beamed upon her finish.”

“It is awesome to win representing the U.S. Army,” Calway said. “This is the last thing that I am doing before I’m shipping out. It means the world to me to run this race — representing the Army, soldiers going overseas, their families, wounded warriors.”

Second and third place went to Slaby and Shertzer.

Americans Patrick Fernandez (2:22:51) and Richard Morris (2:24:01) finished second and third in the men’s race.
