It’s Straneo Versus Kibet In Turin

Both runners had been planning to run in New York City.

Both runners had been planning to run in New York City.

The Italian record holder in the marathon, Valeria Straneo, is looking to channel some home-country spirt in the forthcoming Turin Marathon Gran Premio La Stampa, an IAAF Gold Label Race, that is taking place this Sunday.

But Straneo’s quest for a win there won’t be easy. She’s going to be taking on Holland’s Hilda Kibet.

Both runners were scheduled to compete in the New York City Marathon, but had to change their racing plans due to the cancellation of that event.

Straneo has been on a tear lately. She broke the Italian marathon record in Rotterdam last April, running 2:23:44.

Kibet is the sister of the former world half marathon champion, Lorah Kiplagat.

Straneo and Kibet aside, there are other prospects for the Turin race worth mentioning. Derbe Gordana Gobesa of Ethiopia, a 2:28 marathoner, is in the race, and so is former Italian steeplechase record holder, Emma Quaglia.
