Israeli Soldier Dies At Tel Aviv Half Marathon

Four other runners are in medically-induced comas due to excessive heat.

Four other runners are in medically-induced comas due to excessive heat.

One runner died and dozens of others were treated because of heat-related issues at Friday’s Tel Aviv Half Marathon in Israel.

Michael Michalevitch, a sergeant in the Israeli army, collapsed after finishing the race. The 29-year-old was rushed to the hospital but emergency personnel were unable to resuscitate him.

Four other runners were taken to the hospital and are now in medically-induced comas and are on respirators. In total, more 50 runners were treated at the race.

Temperatures were in the 70s at the start but quickly reached the 90s, even though organizers moved up the start to 5:45 a.m. Earlier this week, race officials postponed the marathon to March 22 because of the forecast.

Yitzhak Aharonovich, Israel’s public security minister, told Israel Radio that the incident was “very serious,” and hinted at race organizers being held responsible for what happened.
