Elizabeth Herndon sets a new women’s beer mile world record.

The inaugural Flotrack Beer Mile World Championships included a new women’s world record on Wednesday night at Circuit of the Americas race track in Austin, Texas, as Elizabeth Herndon, 29, a geology professor from Kent, Ohio, won the women’s elite race with a time of 6:17.76. She broke the women’s beer mile world record by 10.84 seconds.

“This is truly unbelievable,” Herndon said. “I came out here today knowing this might be the only opportunity I had to accomplish something as amazing as.  It’s exciting to now be the one who holds the record that people are chasing.”

Corey Gallagher, 27, a postal carrier from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, won the men’s race with a personal best of 5:00.23, about 3 seconds shy of the men’s world record. Michael Cunningham, 24, of Brewster, N.Y., set a new American record with a 5:07.95 effort.

Top beer mile athletes from around the world competed in front of over 1,000 people at Circuit of the Americas in Austin. People took part in a series of open heats and relays were run, and then culminated with races featuring the elite men and women beer milers. Competitors in the Beer Mile start each lap by drinking a beer, complete the lap and then repeat a total of four laps.

“Flocasts is about elevating our sports by creating celebrities and Super Bowls in their own right,” said Mark Floreani, co-founder Flocasts. “Tonight’s inaugural event was exactly that for track and field and the beer mile.”

Herdon’s performance broke the previous record by almost 11 seconds and earned her $5,000—$2,500 for the win and $2,500 for the world record. Gallagher’s win earned him $2,500.

“There was a lot of pressure coming into this race,” Gallagher said. “I knew I had the capability to win, but it would be a matter of handling that pressure given the unbelievable group of runners at the starting line. I am thrilled to have come out on top.”
