Healthy Kidney 10K Preview

The most exciting entrant is not likely to win the race.

The sixth annual UAE Healthy Kidney 10K, sponsored by the New York Road Runners, takes place Saturday in New York City’s Central Park. The race is sort of a companion to the New York Mini 10K, which is held a month later, in that it assembles an all-male elite field while the Mini is a women-only race from top to bottom.

The elite field for this year’s Healthy Kidney 10K has been announced and it is deep. The favorite to win is Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, who has a sub 13-minute 5K PR and a sub-27-minute 10K PR. The top American prospect is the fast-rising Mo Trafeh, who won the Gate River Run 15K in March by nearly a minute and set a half-marathon PR of 1:00:39 a week later.

Other fast Americans in the field are Abdi Abdirahman, Bobby Curtis, Patrick Smyth, and Ed Moran.

The most intriguing man on the starting line will be former marathon world record holder Khalid Khannouchi. This will be the 39-year-old Moroccan-born American’s first race in two years. Khannouchi says he has no expectation of winning, but only hopes to successfully test the surgically repaired foot that was the cause of his long layoff from racing. We hope he passes that test.
