Jordan Hasay Joins Oregon Project

It was a likely move for the University of Oregon standout.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Jordan Hasay, the 2007 IAAF World Youth Championships silver medalist at 1500m and a two-time NCAA indoor champion, has joined the Nike Oregon Project, the elite training group coached by Alberto Salazar out of Nike’s Beaverton, Ore., headquarters. Hasay, 21, who attended Mission Prep High School in San Luis Obispo, Calif., just wrapped up her collegiate career at the University of Oregon with a third-place finish in the 5000m at the NCAA Championships in front of her home crowd at Hayward Field.

“I am honored to begin my career as a professional athlete with Nike and the Oregon Project,” Hasay said through a statement provided by Pace Sports Management, the Teddington, England, athlete management firm owned by Ricky Simms. “I hope to add to the incredible legacy of such an already distinguished group of athletes.”

At the University of Oregon Hasay was a bona fide star at what is one of America’s most sports-focused universities. Petite with waist-length blonde hair usually fashioned into intricate braids, Hasay became a crowd favorite at Hayward Field and consistently placed well in both conference and national meets. She earned 18 All-America awards, two NCAA indoor titles (Mile & 3000m, 2011), three third place finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (5000m 2013, 1500m 2012, 1500, 2010), and three top-3 performances at the NCAA Cross Country Championships (2nd 2011, 3rd 2012, 3rd 2010). During her stay at Oregon she was coached by Maurica Powell, who had established a good working relationship with Salazar, the three-time ING New York City Marathon champion who coached Mo Farah and Galen Rupp to Olympic medals in London last August.

“We’re thrilled that Jordan is joining the Oregon Project and are looking forward to building off the foundation laid by Maurica Powell & the University of Oregon track program,” Salazar said through a statement. “I have no doubt Jordan will become one of the preeminent American female distance runners at the international level.”

Hasay has personal best times of 4:10.28 for 1500m, 8:57.46 for 3000m (indoors), 15:37.29 for 5000m and 32:06.64 for 10,000m, a distance she only ran for the first time this year. She had hoped to run in the NCAA championships at 10K, but failed to qualify and ran the 5000m instead.

Here in Des Moines, where the USA Outdoor Championships begin today, Hasay is entered — and declared — in tonight’s 10,000m and Sunday’s 5000m. These championships will decide which Americans go to Moscow for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in August.
