Hannah England’s Spartan-like Training In Kenya

She loves it despite the living conditions.

She loves it despite the living conditions.

The world silver medalist in the 1,500 meters, Hannah England, is taking her training up a notch. According to a report on the Mirror’s Web site, the British middle-distance ace has been living in extremely spartan conditions in Kenya.

Examples: A single light bulb hangs from the ceiling. Her room is like a prison cell–four paces by four paces. Air conditioning? Forget it! No television, too.

But England loves it.

“The first time I came here, I said I’d never come back,” she said. “I don’t have a great deal of natural endurance, compared to others out here. I spent five weeks feeling awful and thought, ‘This isn’t for me’. I was running up hills, everyone was running away from me and I thought, ‘Why am I here?’ But I got great results from it.”

Before last year, England had never been to Kenya.

“It’s a totally different world,” she said. “It was a shock at first, the way people live and the conditions they live in. But they seem 10 times happier than people back home!”
