Joseph Gray has had quite a 2013 season.
The 27-year-old defeated a field of 400 runners to win the U.S. Track and Field Club Cross-Country Championships last weekend in Bend, Ore. Yesterday, the USATF named him its Athlete of the Week.
Gray clocked 31 minutes, 5 seconds for the 10K course.
“To be honored as one of the athletes of the week is a huge accomplishment for me, and it’s something I will always remember,” he said. “I have been involved with USATF for a long time in my career — since I was running in Junior Olympics.”
Gray recalled his win, indicating that he went out near the front at the start.
“Slowly I started making my way up to fourth place approaching the backstretch,” he said “When we had the long climb and it was windy, I was able to take the lead and from there I decided to hang on.”
