Got A Beer Gut? Jump On A Treadmill

It helps you shed the worst kind of fat.

It helps you shed the worst kind of fat.

This isn’t that big of a surprise, but it’s worth posting: A new study has found that jogging (or a similar aerobic exercise) is more effective than lifting weights for shedding fat lodged deep within the abdomen.

This kind of fat is called visceral fat, and unlike the flab that can be felt around the waist (subcutaneous fat), it is packed within the body around the internal organs. Medical studies have shown that this kind of fat is the most damaging to your health, driving up risks for heart disease, diabetes, and various kinds of cancer.

The new study on treadmills versus weights was conducted by researchers at Duke University Medical Center. They recruited 196 overweight and sedentary adults to take part and divided them, randomly, into three groups: an aerobic-exercise group, a resistance-training group, and combination group.

The aerobic-exercise group ran the equivalent of 12 miles a week at 80% heart rate.

The resistance-training group performed three sets of 8-12 reps three times a week. The combination group did aerobic and strength-training work.
