Geoffery Mutai Wins New Delhi Half Marathon

A Kenyan man and an Ethiopian woman won the race in the Indian capital.

On his first visit to India, Geoffery Mutai of Kenya won the Aritel Delhi Half Marathon last Sunday. His winning time was 59:38. Mutai edged out Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia by a mere second. Mutai said afterwards that he thought he could have run in the low 59s. “I thought the weather in Delhi would be hot but it was good. I think we can do a 59 here. In fact, we were close to the world mark at the 7th kilometer. At 10 kilometer also we were close to the 59-minute mark but afterwards I slowed down because I don’t like people behind me using me as their pacemaker. I remained in the group till the very end and sprinted after the last 2km mark,” said Mutai.

In the women’s race, Aselefech Mergia of Ethiopia proved victorious. She won in 1:08:35. Mergia had won the race in 2008.

“It was important win for me as I was struggling with an injury for the last four months,” she said.
