Geoffrey Mutai Wins Kenyan XC Championships

He hopes to represent his country at the World Championships in March.

Geoffrey Mutai, the runner-up at the Berlin and Rotterdam Marathons, won the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships on Saturday. The race was held in Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens. Mutai led from the front the entire 12K race. At the 6K mark, he found a new gear and surged ahead. Only Matthew Kisorio and Hosea Macharinyang were able to keep up with him. With one lap remaining, it was just Kisorio who was able to hang with Mutai.

Mutai made his final move with 800m remaining. His winning time was 34:35.

Referring to the World Cross-Country Championships which will be held in Punta Umbria, Spain, Mutai had this to say: “As long as Athletics Kenya allow me to train at my Iten camp, I will happily compete for the country in Spain and bring the nation glory. If they do not, I will concentrate on the Boston Marathon that I have been invited.”

In the women’s 8K race, Linet Masai defeated rival Vivian Cheruiyot, winning in 26:20.
