Tolossa Gedefa Fufi Wins Bay To Breakers 12K

Ethiopia’s Tolossa Gedefa Fufi came to San Francisco with one goal in mind over the weekend: win the prestigious Bay to Breakers.

He did just that on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Fufi was one of the youngest elite runners in the field.

Fufi fought against rival Tesfaye Sendeku Alemayeh all the way to the 3-mile point and then dropped the hammer at the arduous Hayes Street Hill.

His winning time was 35:01.

Ryan Hall, the American half-marathon champion, was second, 39 seconds behind Fufi.

Burundi’s Diane Nukuri-Johnson was the women’s winner. She prevailed in 40:12.

“Coming off of an eighth place finish at the recent Boston Marathon, and placing second at the 2012 Bay to Breakers, I am thrilled to take first place at Bay to Breakers this year,” Nukuri-Johnson said.

In total, $39,000 was given out to the top finishers in the annual Bay Area race.

The Bay to Breakers race is one of the oldest road races in the United States. Typically an overly festive event, the 12K has taken place since 1912.
