Gebrselassie Supports European Schools XC Champs

He says cross-country is important for young runners.

One of Ethiopia’s top runners of all time, Haile Gebrselassie, isn’t shy about getting behind a new race that is set to kick off next February in Gran Canaria, a Spanish island.

The inaugural event is called the European Schools Cross-Country Open (ESCCO) and will put teams from all over the continent. Divisions include the junior, intermediate and senior age groups.

“Cross-country for me was very important,” Gebrselassie said. “As you know, my career started in 1991 at the World Junior Cross Championships in Antwerp, where I finished eighth.”

“I believe it is a great way to build a good base from middle distance on the track to long distance on the roads,” he continued. “It’s simply unique and brings people from various disciplines together. The initiative of having the ESCCO is fantastic and I believe this is a way to inspire and motivate the next generation in Europe.”
