Gebrhiwet Triumphs In Great Ethiopian Run

The 19-year-old had to work hard for his win.

He’s an Olympic 5,000m finalist and is the current world junior record holder in that event, and on Sunday, Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia added a win at the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa to his impressive resume.

The 19-year-old clocked 28:37 to win the annual 10K race, which also serves as the capstone event for a weekend-long running festival.

Berhanu Legesse came in second four seconds behind, while Belete Assefa took third (28:58).

The race was hardly an easy win for Gebrhiwet. At the 6.5K mark, he tried to shake Legesse and Assefa with a bold move, but wasn’t able to succeed.

He eventually let his competitors take the lead and stayed in third until the 9K mark.

“I opted to stay behind because the race and the weather was a bit tough, but I regained my energy after nine kilometres and was able to win it,” Gebrhiwet said. “I am so happy to achieve this success.”

In the women’s race, Aberu Kebede took first in 33:27. Tsgereda Girma and Belaynesh Oljira finished second and third respectively.
