Geb Commits To Great North Run

Marathon world record holder keeps promise to race biggest half marathon.

Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie, a multiple Olympic medalist on the track and the only man to ever run under 2:04 in the marathon, will make good on a past promise and run the BUPA Great North Run on September 19.

“This is a race I have always wanted to compete in and I’m really looking forward to running as it has a worldwide reputation for not only the quality but also the fantastic size of the field,” Gebrselassie said.

The BUPA Great North Run is known as one of the fastest half marathons in the world. The 37-year old Gebrselassie is one of the greatest distance runners in history, and has a personal best of 58:55 for the 13.1-mile distance, which at one time was the world record.
