Nearly a week after shattering Chris Solinsky’s American record in the 10,000 meters, Galen Rupp finally sat down with reporters to share his thoughts on the incredible race.

Rupp, a former University of Oregon standout who is coached by Alberto Salazar, fielded questions during a USATF teleconference. He ran 26:48.00 at the Brussels Diamond League meeting last Friday.

Regarding Solisnky’s old mark, 26:59.60, Rupp said he was confident he could break it at some point.

“Going in, I definitely thought I had a good shot of bettering that,” he said.  “I was obviously really happy with the result. I just tried to put it [the time] out of my head. Towards the end, with about 600 meters to go, I saw what the time was and at that point, I was able to figure out I was going to do something special.”

Fielding a question about what it takes to now earn either a World Championship or Olympic medal, Rupp had this to say: “Our mantra has always been just keep getting better every year and keep chipping away at the gap between us and the top guys.”
