Freed Chilean Miner Will Run NYC Marathon

New York Road Runners expect to make an official announcement soon.

Edison Pena, the 34-year-old Chilean miner nicknamed “The Runner” after he famously ran 3 to 6 miles a day while trapped for 69 days in the San Jose mine, will reportedly run Sunday’s ING New York City Marathon, according to reports.

“All I can say is that we are planning on having a fun news announcement to make and finalizing plans this morning” New York Road Runners spokesman Richard Finn wrote in an e-mail to Universal Sports.

Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of the New York Road Runners, extended an invitation to Pena shortly after the miners had been set free.

“The marathon is all about heart, determination, courage, hope and overcoming challenge,” Wittenberg said last month. “What a perfect platform New York is to celebrate Mr. Peña, and his colleagues, who displayed all the above in a ‘marathon’ way beyond any the rest of us could imagine.”
