Florence Kiplagat Looking For London Win

She admits her marathon training has gone well.

She admits her marathon training has gone well.

Florence Kiplagat of Kenya is a hero in her native country. At the 2009 World Cross-Country Championships, she ended a 16-year Kenyan drought of gold medals. Two years later, she stood atop the winner’s podium in the half marathon.

Now Kiplagat is on the hunt for a marathon win in London this month. She already has tasted victory in the 26.2-mile distance, however, when she won the BMW Berlin Marathon last year, running a blazing 2:19:44.

“For a long time, I have suffered injuries but this time round, I am ready for the battle. I really want to make the team to the Olympics,” she said yesterday.

She admits her training has proceeded nicely in the lead-up to London. “I am preparing well and I hope to be in great shape. I know it is quite difficult since nearly all top stars will compete, but I will run my own race,” she said.

Kiplagat will be taking on the defending champion, Mary Keitany, in London.
