Need some motivation to get moving this winter? Sign up for one of these great races!
In many parts of the country it seems as if winter will never end. Retreating to the gym to get in a run because it’s cold and snowing outside has lost its appeal–that is, if it even had appeal in the first place! Before we know it, though, the sun will start to peek through the clouds, the snow will melt and we’ll be back running the roads and trails in no time. If your motivation to get out the door is low, now is the perfect time to put a spring marathon on your calendar. On the following pages you’ll find a few worth looking at in late April and early May.
St. Jude Country Music Nashville Marathon
Date: April 28
With more than 30,000 finishers each year (marathon and half marathon) this is one of the largest races in the country, and also one of the most exciting. With bands playing on 28 different stages along the course this might be a good race to ditch the iPod. If the full marathon isn’t your thing, there’s a popular half marathon option as well. The Tennessee terrain is anything but flat, so be prepared to get your hills on!
Big Sur International Marathon
Date: April 29
Big Sur, Calif.
Don’t be surprised when this course takes your breath away. The scenery along all 26.2 miles of this course is just beautiful. Surrounded by the massive Redwoods unique to the area and the views of the coast from Big Sur all the way up to Carmel, you’ll have plenty to distract you from the pain of running for hours.
New Jersey Marathon At The Shore
Date: May 6
Long Branch, N.J.
Not as well known as another certain east coast spring marathon, The New Jersey Marathon is recommended by nearly every one of its past participants. The fast, flat, two-loop course along the coast is great for hopeful Boston qualifiers.
KeyBank Vermont City Marathon
Date: May 27
This small scenic marathon is capped at 3,600 participants and is set against the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Known for it’s fantastic crowd support, the race takes runners along a cloverleaf shaped course, allowing spectators to cheer on their friends and family several times without having to chase down different viewing points along the course.
Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon
Date: June 3
San Diego, Calif.
This scenic course tours America’s Finest City and finishes at Sea World for a post-race celebration like no other. Near ideal temperatures and a flat, fast course add to the appeal. Twenty-six-point-two miles sound like too much? There’s an accompanying half marathon too, featuring all the fun of the full at half the distance.
