Five National Records Toppled At NYC Half

Female runners steal the show in the Big Apple.

Despite cold temperatures, five national records went down at last weekend’s New York City Half Marathon.

They were all courtesy of female runners.

For starters, Diane Nukuri-Johnson clocked 1:09:12. A Burundi citizen, she improved her own record of 1:10:55 that she set last year in New York. And then there was Croatia. Lisa Stublic finished third in the race with a time of 1:10:31. Stublic is an American citizen who was born in Waterbury, Conn.

One of the largest improvements from a PR perspective came from Ukraine’s Lyudmila Kovalenko. She smashed her best time by 4 minutes with a 1:09:43. Finishing behind the Ukrainian was Colombia’s Yolanda Caballero, who not only set a new national best, but also became the fastest South American at the 13.1-mile distance. Her finishing time was 1:10:30.

Finally there was Jane Vongvorachoti, who set a Thai record in 1:17:41.

Other personal records fell as well: American Stephanie Rothstein-Bruce (Flagstaff, Ariz.) came in ninth after stopping the clock in 1:10:53.
