Fast Fields Gathered For Great North Run

Gebrselassie, Ritzenhein, Lel lead a loaded men’s race.

The ING Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon isn’t the only heaving-hitting half marathon on the racing schedule this weekend.

Across the pond in the UK, the 30th BUPA Great North Run boasts marathon world-record holder Haile Gebrselassie as its headlining act. The Ethiopian, who is making his long-awaited first appearance at the event, will challenge defending champion Martin Lel of Kenya for victory. American Dathan Ritznehein, who like Gebrselassie is preparing to run the ING New York City Marathon on November 7, will be also try to contend for the win while attempting to lower his half-marathon best of 60 minutes flat set at this race last year.

On the women’s side, Ethiopian Berhane Adere, who sports a half marathon personal best of 67:52, is the favorite. She will line up against Great Britain’s Mara Yamauchi, Germany’s Irina Mikitenko and Romania’s Constantina Dita, the reigning Olympic Marathon champion. Last year’s winner, Jessica Augusto of Portugal, has withdrawn from the race due to injury.
