Edwin Kipyego Wins Eldoret Half Marathon

He defeated London Marathon champion Emmanuel Mutai.

An underdog prevailed in the 21st Nike International Discovery Kenya Half Marathon on Sunday. Edwin Kipeygo, 24 years old, held off moves from the very best Kenya has to offer. In the lead pack with him was the 2011 London Marathon champion, Emmanuel Mutai, along with James Kwambai, and the world marathon bronze medalist, Bernard Kiprop.

Kipyego picked up the pace at the 14K mark. It was then that he dropped the three other runners.

His winning time was 62 minutes and 30.3 seconds.

“I never expected to win the race,” he recalled afterwards. “I just wanted to test how an injury I picked up last October was responding. I have no plans to step up to full marathon soon.”

Enock Mitei (62:41.3), Victor Kipchirchir (62:47.4), Anthony Maritim (62:51.1) and Jackson Limo (62:54.3) came in second through fifth, respectively.

Emmauel Mutai faded to sixth place. He plans to return to London in April to defend his title. James Kwambai will head to the Seoul International Marathon in March.
