Edwin Kipyego Prevails In New Delhi Half Marathon

Yimer Wude won the women’s race.

It’s no surprise that New Delhi, India doesn’t have the best conditions to run a fast road race. Last weekend, the heat in the Indian capital made things challenging at the Aritel New Delhi Half Marathon.

After the start of the race, last year’s champion, Lelisa Desisa, was in the lead pack, but eventually dropped back after 10K, citing Achilles issues.

Eventual winner Edwin Kipyego then broke away from rival and fellow Kenyan Silas Kipruto.

By 20K, Kipyego had just man to contend with: Leonard Langat. Kipyego’s lead was 100 meters at this point with temperatures and humidity quickly rising.

The Kenyan broke the tape in 60:55, which was the slowest winning time in the last six years. Langat came in second (1:01:07), while Kipruto rounded out third in 1:01:57.

“The weather was good at the start but later on it became humid.” Kipyego said afterwards. “I tried my best but could not set any record. But I am very happy with the results, because I hadn’t expected to win.”
