Edris Prevails At The Cinque Mulini

It was a banner day for Ethiopia as they captured both the men’s and women’s titles.

Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris was the first male runner to cross the line at the 81st edition of the Cinque Mulini last weekend.

Edris, who was the 2012 World Championships 5,000m gold medalist, clocked 30:08 for the 10.3K cross-country circuit course. He defeated Kenya’s Albert Rop by just a second.

The race was highly competitive with a large pack joining Edris in the first two laps. The group was made up of Uganda’s Thomas Ayeko, Kenya’s Bernard Rotich, Poland’s Krisztian Zalewksi and the Italians Mohammed El Mounim, Gianmarco Buttazz0, and Bernard Dematteis.

“I really enjoy running in Italy,” Edris said afterward. “I won three cross country races and finished second [on the roads] in the Giro di Trento and in the Boclassic in Bolzano. I am now planning to run the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships.”

Meanwhile, in the women’s race, Afera Godfay won with a 21:56 showing for the 6.5K course.

Eunice Kales of Kenya came in second 16 seconds later.
