Dibaba Joins NYC Diamond League Field

She is making a comeback on the outdoor track.

She is making a comeback on the outdoor track.

The reigning Olympic 5000m and 10,000m champion, Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia is the latest edition to the star-studded Samsung Diamond League Meet that is taking place at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, New York on June 9.

The 26-year-old Dibaba is making a comeback of sorts. She was sidelined for last year’s track season due to injury, but her two appearances this year have both been victories.

Other top-notch runners will be taking part in the race. Abubaker Kaki of Sudan will run the men’s 800m. The 22-year-old is a two-time indoor world champion (2008 and 2010). He faces off against world-record holder David Rudisha of Kenya.

Moving down in distance to the 400m is the recent addition of South Africa’s “blade runner”, Oscar Pistorius, who  is a double amputee and runs on special prosthetic legs.

“Last year at the adidas Grand Prix, I had a great experience on the way to my first World Championships,” Pistorius said. “This year, I know the Icahn Stadium fans will put everything they’ve got behind my quest to compete in the Olympics.”
