David Torrence, Sara Hall Win U.S. 1-Mile Road Champs

He made the final move with 200 meters to go.

Twenty-five-year-old David Torrence of Oakland, California won the U.S. 1-Mile Championships yesterday in Minneapolis. His winning time, 3:58.4, was also a new course record by nine-tenths of a second. This feat garnered him a $10,000 bonus.

This is like [my] home course, basically,” he said afterwards. “I really enjoy the fact that the course hasn’t changed, and I know it pretty intimately. The last couple years I have ran it about three, four times each trip.”

Torrence had a strategy in the works going into the race. “I knew the last 200 [meters] is where it mattered because it is uphill and it can take it out of you,” Torrence recalled. “I was biding my time, biding my time. When I made that turn, I put the hammer down and I guess no one could respond.”

Torrence was in third place when he made the turn and quickly passed two runners ahead of him. Ryan Hall, who had just placed fourth in the Boston Marathon last month, finished well back.

However, Hall’s wife, Sara, won the women’s race in 4:30.8.
