For both runners, the Mediterranean Principality holds a special meaning.
World-record holder in the 800m, David Rudisha will be toeing the line at the Monaco Diamond League meeting on July 22. Joining him will be fellow Kenyan Silas Kiplagat who will compete in the 1500m event. Both runners confirmed their slots on the Kenyan team last week at their country’s national championships for the World Championships in Athletics that begin next month.
For both runners, Monaco is a special place.
Rudisha, who has yet to be beaten in the 800m, was named the IAAF Athlete of the Year last November in Monaco. It was the first time a Kenyan male had received that honor. Last July, Kiplagat won the Monaco 1500m last July on his European debut. His time in the race was a world-leading 3:29.27.
For this year’s event, Kiplagat hasn’t ruled out going for another speedy mark. On the other hand, Rudisha, who has picked his races sparingly this year due to an aggravating ankle injury, has stated he wants to use the race to consolidate his position in the Diamond League standings.
