All eyes had been on Olympic marathoner Dathan Ritzenhein at the sixth edition of the Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot/5K on Thursday. But in the end, the victory went to the reigning NCAA 5,000m champion, David McNeill.

McNeill’s winning time was 13 minutes 33 seconds. Stephen Sambu was the runner up finisher four seconds afterward, while third place went to Diego Estrada in 13:38. Former American 5,000m record holder Ritzenhein was fifth in 13:49.

The course record had been held by Alan Webb (13:36) who won last year’s edition of the race. Previous champions have included Scott Bauhs and Blake Boldon.

In the women’s race, Jackie Areson, the 2011 NCAA indoor 5,000-meters champion and Tennessee alumnus was the first to cross the line. Her winning time was 16:02. Second place went to Aziza Aliyu, while Kellyn Johnson and Clara Peterson were third and fourth respectively.

A total of 21,000 people, the maximum participation level, took to the streets of downtown San Jose yesterday.
