Daffodils Planned Along Boston Marathon Route

Groups are trying to raise $26,500 for the project.

Volunteers and organizers from top horticultural organizations are planning to add some more beauty to the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon course.

According to a report on Boston.com, the group has created project Marathon Daffodils, which is trying to raise $26,500. Organizer Diane Valle says the flowers will preserve the spirit of the marathon.

Apparently, the group will go the extra proverbial “mile” and plant a total of 26.5 miles of flowers.

The Tower Hill Botanic Garden, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, New England Wildflower Society, the Garden Club Federation, the town of Brookline, the Charles River Conservancy, as well as others have signed up to participate.

“We believe Marathon Daffodils represent spring and birth,” said Kathy Abbott of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden. “This is a great community building opportunity.”

The daffodil was chosen because the flower will bloom around the time that the 2014 edition of the Boston Marathon takes place. Additionally, yellow is considered to be the symbol of hope and rebirth in light of the devastating terrorist attack that took place this year.
