One devoted father is going to attempt a marathoning feat to help his daughter.
For the next 20 weeks, Guy Fessenden of Abilene, Texas hopes to run five marathons a week. He’s attempting this feat for the sake of his 28-year-old daughter, Suzanne, who is suffering from mental illness. According to Fessenden, Suzanne suffers from schizophrenia and depression.
She has been in and out of mental hospitals for 60 percent of her life. Fessenden hopes to use running to raise awareness for mental illness and help fund his daughter’s treatments.
“My daughter is a spectacular person. She is a smart, funny, beautiful young woman,” he says.
Fessenden’s journey will take him across the country–from Georgia to California for a total of 140 days. He is determined to pull it off. “I have to keep going,” he said. “I’m trying to do 100 marathons and run into 100 cities and deliver 100 messages not of ‘victory’, but that we have this horrible battle that still needs to be fought.”
