Any World War 2 history buff will tell you that Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, is famous for its daring parachute assault by the U.S. 101st Airborne Division, but on Sunday a different kind of history was made in the Dutch city.

Dickson Kiptolo Chumba of Kenya, 25 years old, upset the field to win the  De Lage Lander Eindhoven Marathon in 2:05:46.

Chumba’s mark, a course record, was two second better than his compatriot, Jafred Chirchir, from last year.

“I was very, very tired over the last two kilometres,” admitted Chumba afterwards. “I didn’t really know what was happening behind me.”

Chumba set a new personal best in the race by an incredible 90 seconds.

“I decided to make my break just before 29 kilometres because my body felt very good and the pace at that time felt so slow. I was quite surprised at first because I thought somebody might come with me but I soon felt confident that I could win.”
