Councilors Ask Adidas To Boycott Jerusalem Marathon

The marathon is the newest cause of Middle-East tension.

One of the major sponsors of the International Jerusalem Marathon received an angry letter from three Jerusalem City Councilors last week. The councilors are upset that part of the marathon’s course runs through East Jerusalem, the part of the city inhabited primarily by Arabs.

“There’s no reason why it needs to go through the eastern part of the city,” said City Councilman Pepe Alalu. “A marathon does not bring Jews and Arabs together. This is just an aggressive move.”

City Councilman Elisha Peleg, a member not in agreement with the opposition, accused the three councilors of trying stifle every initiative that the city has created.

“A small part of it [the marathon] runs through east Jerusalem because east Jerusalem is part of Jerusalem, and that’s not political; it’s factual,” he said. Peleg noted that the municipality will not change the route and doesn’t think that Adidas will respond to the letter.

“Adidas will not take this call seriously because they’re not involved in politics. They’re involved in sports,” he said.
