For Rosalba Console, the upcoming Vienna City Marathon on April 14 is more than just a race. It could be a major comeback.
The Italian won the race nine years ago. Now 33, she is hoping to do it again.
Her time then for the 26.2-mile race was 2:29:22 and is most likely her most-impressive marathon victory. Since then, she’s whittled down her PR to 2:26:10 that she set at the Berlin Marathon two years ago.
Squaring off against the Italian are a pair of speedy Ethiopians: Kebebush Haile and Meskerem Assefa. Haile won the 2011 Shanghai Marathon in 2:24:09. However, she did not improve on that mark last year.
On the other hand, Assefa enjoyed a strong debut at this year’s Houston Marathon when she ran a 2:25:17 to place third in challenging weather.
Previously, Assefa had been a 1500m runner, so her conversion to the marathon is a bit of a surprise.
