Former Olympic champion is “disappointed” in South African federation.

Former Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis has come out to defend Caster Semenya, the young South African women’s 800m world champion. Semenya has been forced to undergo gender tests to prove she is, in fact, a woman.

Lewis says that the he believes the South African sports federation should have dealt with this issue when it was originally brought up in July. Instead of having her cleared through a gender test before the world championships, the South African federation decided to allow her to compete without verification of her gender. Lewis believes it is her country who should be to blame for the entire world focusing on the young girl, instead of them blaming others. Lewis believes her federation let her down and is to blame for putting her though the media circus she has had to deal with.
