Canadian Record Toppled In Toronto

Lanni Marchant broke a 28-year-old mark.

Lanni Marchant broke a 28-year-old mark.

This past Sunday was a great day for Canadian distance running. According to a report posted on the CBC website, Canada’s Lanni Marchant set a new national record for the marathon, clocking 2:28:32 at the Toronto Marathon.

Krista DuChene, also a Canadian citizen, came in second 32 seconds behind Marchant. Both runners’ times were better than the previous Canadian women’s marathon record of 2:28:36 held by Sylvia Ruegger and set way back in 1985.

“I am still in shock,” said Marchant after her run.”My calves didn’t cramp as bad as the worlds [World Championships in Moscow], but they definitely started to hurt … After the first 10 kilometers, I thought, ‘OK, you are feeling alright. Stay with the group until 20km and then 20km came and then 30 km.’

“I guess about 33km or 34km in I kind of pulled away from Krista and I was thinking, ‘I have to keep going.’ The worlds was in the back of mind, and with a flip of a switch things can go wrong. So I thought ‘take control, stay patient.'”
