A 12-year-old California girl is almost halfway to her goal of running seven marathons on seven continents. She plans to complete the feat by next year, which would make her the youngest person to ever finish such a task.
Blanca Ramirez, who lives in the Los Angeles suburb of La Puente, has finished three marathons thus far in the United States, Africa and Asia, and her best time is 5:59.
Her father, Dimar Ramirez, told KTLA5 his daughter first had the idea to go seven-for-seven after the family ran a marathon together at Disneyland in 2013.
“’This is something that I want to do, so the fame that I get, I can do to help a charity,’” Ramirez recalled his daughter as saying at the time. “So, I’m like, ‘oh.’ I can’t say no to that.”
Ramirez is running to support Operation Smile, a charity organization that provides free cleft surgeries.
The elder Ramirez runs with his daughter at every race, giving her encouragement when she needs it. He told the TV station he has spent more than $10,000 funding the project.
Ramirez’ next marathon will be in South America next month, followed by a race in Australia in November. She plans to run a marathon in Europe at the start of 2015 before completing her journey with a race in Antarctica next March.
