Boston Runners Selling Medals For Charity

Proceeds from ebay auctions are being sent to the One Fund Boston.

Some Boston Marathon runners are doing something that’s essentially unheard of: They’re selling their finisher medals.

ESPN reports that Albert Swallow and a number of other runners are selling their medals, finisher t-shirts and other race memorabilia on ebay for upwards of $1,000. However, they’re not keeping the money.

Swallow and host of others are donating the proceeds to the One Fund Boston, a charity set up to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“I recognize the controversy regarding the sale of items related to this year’s race,” Swallow told ESPN via e-mail. “But I could not justify hanging this medal in my closet, where I have all my race medals, when someone would pay such a high price for it and I could donate the proceeds to One Fund to help the victims.”
