Boston Marathoners Finish At Indy 500

They were honored by a crowd of thousands.

They were honored by a crowd of thousands.

After the tragic bombings at April’s Boston Marathon, many racers found themselves unable to finish.

Last Sunday, dozens of these runners were able to complete their race at the storied “yard of bricks” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

According to the Boston Globe, thousands of spectators at the annual car race cheered the runners on as they came down the front stretch.

The group came across the finish in a cordon that was lined with police officers and firefighters.

‘‘It was incredible. I have never run through a crowd like this,’’ said Amber Larason, who had come to within two miles of the finish line in Boston on April 15 before she had to stop due to the bombing. “I’ve never experienced anything like this. It was amazing.’’

Following the Boston bombings, officials from the Indy 500 reached out to runners from Indiana and nearby states who didn’t complete the race.

“The tragedy last month in Boston still resonates with everyone, so we wanted to give runners the chance to finish the race in front of thousands of fans who will appreciate their persistence and determination,’’ Indianapolis Motor Speedway COO Doug Boles said.
