Boston Marathon Runners Feel The Sting Of Winter In Their Training

Many roads and sidewalks are simply unsafe to run on.

Many roads and sidewalks are simply unsafe to run on.

The Polar Vortex that has gripped the nation this winter has led to record low temperatures and several feet of snow in many areas.

That’s good if you’re a skier, but bad if you’re a runner.

If you live in the Northeast and are training for the Boston Marathon, that means, most likely, your training has suffered.

“Single temps, I’m not really used to running in,” Massachusetts resident Jen Hansen told CBS Boston. Next month’s Boston Marathon will be her first 26.2-mile journey.

Added local resident Kevin Garofoli: “With all of the snow, there hasn’t been the access to roads, to sidewalks, to tracks.”

Such is the conundrum that many runners are facing as they train for spring marathons such as Boston.

With many roads not safe to run on because of snow, ice and a lack of space for runners, marathoners have two options: Hit the treadmill, or don’t run.
