Sick of running that same loop around your house? Feeling lonely on that Sunday 20-miler? If you happen to live in London, there may be a club for you.
They call themselves “Run Dem Crew”.
According to founder Charlie Dark, a famous spoken word poet in London, Run Dem Crew is “a running club for people who don’t consider themselves runners.”
They run at night.
Dark, no pun intended, began running with friends in the evening as a way to warm up for his gig. He quickly learned the good that running can do for one’s self-esteem and decided to combine the sport with his youth mentoring volunteer work, partnering with Nike.
“When you run a distance you’ve only ever covered on a bus, and you have the safety in numbers to move through different postcodes, that gives you a huge sense of achievement,” he said.
When Run Dem Crew gets together, they split up into Tortoises for the beginners, Cheetahs for the experienced runners, and Hares and Greyhounds for those in between.
