Bobby Mack Wins Edinburgh XC Race

The American held off Spain's Ayad Lamdassem.

The American held off Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem.

The U.S. is not a known cross-country powerhouse, but that wasn’t the case at the Bupa Great Edinburgh race over the weekend.

Bobby Mack defeated Ayad Lamdassem of Spain by a second in the senior men’s 8K race. Lamdassem is a two-time European Cross-Country silver medalist.

Mack’s winning time was 24:27. Andy Vernon of Great Britain came in third in 24:29.

In the women’s international 3K race, Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba was the clear winner in 9:46. Second place went to Meseret Defar, who came across the line five seconds later. Kenya’s Linet Masai was good for third in 9:55.

“She has the experience and deserved to win,” Meseret Defar said of Dibaba. “This is my first for eight years and it’s good preparation for the outdoor track season. I also ran well against Vivian and Linet who are much more experienced at cross country.”

In the women’s team event (6K), Fionnuala Britton of Ireland cruised to an easy, 16-second victory.
