Black Bear Attacks Runner In Washington State

She survived the attack by playing dead.

A 36-year-old woman runner is thankful to be alive. On Thursday, she was on a trail in the Colville National Forest of northeast Washington State when a large black bear attacked her. Washington State fish and wildlife officers are currently pursuing the bear.

According to the Stevens Country sheriff’s office, the trail the woman was running on is between Thomas and Gillette lakes–about 17 miles northeast of Colville. The woman reportedly dropped to the ground in a protective fetal position while the bear batted at her. The bear then left, leaving the woman who was later taken to the Colville hospital and released.

Officials are investigating the scene and putting down bear traps. Wildlife Captain Chris Anderson said that if the bear that committed the assault is caught it will be euthanized.

Historical records indicated that there have been five other bear attacks against humans in Washington State with one fatality. There are approximately 25,000 to 30,000 black bears in the state.
