Australia’s Collis Birmingham did what he had to do in order to qualify for the World Cross Country Championships. The Australian put on a tremendous kick at the men’s 12K selection race in Canberra on Sunday.
He was joined by Brett Robinson and Liam Adams at the halfway mark, before Birmingham made his move and took off ahead of his competitors.
“It didn’t feel like I was running any faster,” Birmingham later said of his decisive move.
His winning time was 34:21 in the race that wound through Stromlo Forest Park.
Birmingham has now been selected to the team six times as a senior. The highest placing that he’s achieved in the world championships was 29th in Amman, Jordan four years ago.
