Last year, he said he wasn’t going to return to Madison Square Garden.
American 5,000m record holder Bernard Lagat will be going for his ninth win at the Wanamaker Mile on Friday night. The Wanamaker Mile is the signature event of this year’s 104th Millrose Games.
Last year, Lagat broke Eamonn Coghlin’s record for the most wins in the Wanamaker, which is held on a high-banked track in Madison Square Garden.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, Lagat said that he originally hadn’t planned on running another Wanamaker: “After winning last year and breaking that record, I wanted to stop at the very top. I thought maybe I can continue with something else, maybe move up to the longer distances, find other challenges.”
But if Lagat wins this year, it won’t be easy.
He’s squaring off against the world indoor 1500m champion, Deresse Mekonnen from Ethiopia.
“Mekonnen is really strong. He knows how to run indoor,” Lagat admitted. “I’m sure he’s ready, but I don’t want to lose to him. I don’t want to lose Millrose Games.”
