What follows is a press release posted on Running USA:

BURLINGTON, Vermont – RunVermont and the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon have proudly announced that Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson will be their guest at the 26th KeyBank Vermont City Marathon. She will be involved in every aspect of Race Weekend activities with many opportunities for runners to meet Joan next May.

In addition to being an Olympic Gold Medalist at the 1984 Olympics in the marathon, Joan Benoit Samuelson, known to many as “Joanie,” also won the 1979 and 1983 Boston Marathon. She set the American Record at the Chicago Marathon in 1985, running a time of 2:21:21 that stood for eighteen years.

The 2014 KeyBank Vermont City Marathon & Relay will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the women’s marathon being introduced into the Olympics in Los Angeles, where Benoit Samuelson won gold.

“We’re very excited to have Joanie here for this year’s race. She’s one of the most accomplished athletes in our sport and one of the greatest ambassadors. I’m confident that we’ll show her what a spectacular race we have.” said Peter Delaney, Executive Director of RunVermont.
