One of Ethiopia’s most talented runners will be heading to the Emerald Isle. According to a report posted on the Irish Times Web site, Kenenisa Bekele is to run the Spar Great Ireland Run on April 15.

Ireland has been good to the 29-year-old multiple Olympic medalist. Ten years ago, he became the first male athlete to win the long and short course races in the same year at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Dublin.

Bekele has had a rough patch lately. He has been struggling with injury and put forth a sub-par performance at the Edingburgh Cross Country in January.

Brendan Foster, whose company organizes the Great Ireland Run, was pleased when he heard Bekele wanted to run there.

“I was delighted when Bekele’s agent Jos Hermens rang me and asked whether we could find a slot in the Spar Great Ireland Run for him and of course there was no way I was going to say ‘no’ to such an outstanding legend,”  he said.
