BAA: Boston Runners Raised Record Amount At 2014 Race

Charity runners at the April race brought in $38.4 million.

Charity runners at the Boston Marathon this year raised $38.4 million, a record number and nearly double the amount raised in 2013.

More than 300 organizations received donations from an untold number of the 36,000 runners who participated in the 2014 run from Hopkinton to downtown Boston. According to a Boston Athletic Association press release, most of the fundraising runners gained entry into the race through the BAA’s official charity program.

“This year’s Boston Marathon was like no other that we have witnessed,” said Tom Grilk, BAA Executive Director. “We worked in cooperation with the community, especially the eight cities and towns which comprise the Boston Marathon route and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to accommodate as many participants as possible, and we were delighted that so many chose to channel their dedication and commitment towards fundraising for worthwhile causes. The 2014 Boston Marathon will go down in history as a special day for the sport, for the City of Boston and for unprecedented fundraising, all benefitting local charities.”

The 2013 race, which was interrupted by two bombs that exploded at the finish line, raised $20 million for various charities.
